UC Admit Rates: South Bay and Cupertino Corridor High Schools

Did you know? Cupertino High had a higher UC admit rate last year than Monta Vista — and a higher UC admit rate than Lynbrook.

Cupertino High's UC admit rate in the most recent published cycle: 41 percent. Monta Vista: 39 percent. Lynbrook: 36 percent.

Take a moment with that. Monta Vista and Lynbrook are schools Silicon Valley families move across city lines to attend. They're the ones that show up in the competitive parent whisper networks, the ones that generate the anguished posts on neighborhood Facebook groups every spring. And yet Cupertino High — also a Fremont Union school, sitting right next door — had the highest UC admit rate in the corridor.

This is, without question, the most counterintuitive set of numbers in our entire Bay Area series. And if you're a Monta Vista or Lynbrook parent right now, we see you. So before we go any further: this is not bad news for Fremont Union families. We promise. By the end of this post you'll understand exactly why these numbers look the way they do — and why they don't mean what you might think. You're a parent and you deserve the actual data, so here it is.

This is the fourth post in our regional series. Each week we're walking through one Bay Area region, reviewing the public and charter high schools, and explaining what the UC numbers actually say. Today: the South Bay and Cupertino Corridor — Fremont Union High, Mountain View–Los Altos Union, Los Gatos–Saratoga Union, and Campbell Union High schools.

One note before we get to the table: this data covers public and charter high schools only. The prominent private schools in this region — Bellarmine College Preparatory, Archbishop Mitty, Notre Dame San Jose, Sacred Heart Preparatory, Saint Francis High in Mountain View, The Harker School, and Presentation High — are not included. UC suppresses school-level data when fewer than five students apply from a given school at a given campus, which effectively excludes most private schools from the published dataset. They send real numbers of kids to UC, but we can't compare them here.

Ten South Bay / Cupertino Corridor public high schools, ranked

This is every public high school in this corridor we have UC data on, ranked by UC admit rate in the most recent published cycle (Fall 2025 — kids who started college this past fall).

A few things probably jumped out:

Cupertino High tops the list , even though most families in this corridor would rank it third or fourth among Fremont Union schools in prestige. It beat Monta Vista by two points and Lynbrook by five.
Prospect High — a Campbell Union school most South Bay parents rarely mention — tied Monta Vista at 39 percent. With 808 applicants, it's a much smaller pool, but the rate is real.
The five Fremont Union schools cluster in the top five slots (Cupertino, Monta Vista, Lynbrook, Homestead, Fremont High in Sunnyvale). As a district, Fremont Union sends enormous numbers of kids to UC — and yet the admit rates span from 34 percent to 41 percent within that single district.
Saratoga High lands at 34 percent, which will surprise many families who consider it one of the most academically competitive schools in the Bay Area. Los Gatos High, at 31 percent, is lowest on the list.
The entire list spans only ten percentage points — from 31 percent to 41 percent. This is a very compressed range, which tells you something: the whole corridor sends kids who are at or above the UC bar. What's shifting the admit rate up or down at each school is more subtle than raw academics.

This is real. It's also not what most families in this corridor assume. So let's talk about why.

Why the "good schools" admit rates are lower

Here's the thing UC does that most rankings don't: they read every application in context.

When a kid applies to UC from Monta Vista or Lynbrook, UC sees the school profile. They see that these schools offer 20 to 30 AP courses. They see that the average senior took 4 to 7 APs. They see that nearly every senior is college-bound, that most have parents with advanced degrees in tech, law, or medicine, and that the families in those neighborhoods spend years preparing their kids specifically for elite college admissions. UC reads the kid's transcript against that environment.

When a student applies from Cupertino High, UC sees a Fremont Union school with strong AP offerings — but a slightly more variable applicant pool, a somewhat broader range of post-high-school plans among the senior class, and a student body that's slightly less uniformly elite in parent education level than Monta Vista's. UC reads that kid's transcript against that environment too.

It's not that UC is grading Monta Vista kids harder. It's that UC is asking: did this kid maximize what was in front of them? At a school where most classmates are taking five or six APs and the expectation of UC attendance is baked in from eighth grade, "maximizing" means something different than at a school where strong students stand out more from their peers. At a school where a majority of parents hold graduate degrees in STEM and have been building their child’s academic resume since middle school, a perfect GPA carries a different signal than at a school where it's slightly less universal.

The math of it: when you take a high-performing applicant pool from Monta Vista or Lynbrook — where most kids far exceed the basic UC bar — and run them through holistic review where the school's strong profile is "expected" rather than "exceptional," the admit rate compresses. When you take a slightly more variable applicant pool from Cupertino High, where strong applications stand out a bit more relative to the school's profile, the admit rate stretches.

This is not bad news for Monta Vista and Lynbrook families. It's actually how UC has worked since 1996, when California banned race-based admissions and UC leaned harder into family income, school profile, and first-generation status as the things they could legally consider. Holistic review means context matters — and the context at Monta Vista is extremely high-pressure in every direction.

What about kids actually getting in?

Here's a number that does not show up on the rankings list. Monta Vista sent roughly 1,072 kids to a UC last year. Cupertino High sent roughly 1,016. In absolute terms, those are almost identical. Lynbrook sent about 912. Homestead sent about 832.

Monta Vista has the highest raw count of UC admits in the entire corridor — more than Cupertino High, more than Lynbrook — precisely because it has the most applicants. Saratoga High sent about 584 kids to UC. Los Altos High sent about 721.

The schools with the biggest applicant pools are still sending the most kids to a UC, full stop. The admit rate differences reflect the composition and competitiveness of the applicant pool, not the ceiling on what any individual student can achieve. If you're a Monta Vista parent and your kid is in the top half of the class, takes hard courses, and writes a thoughtful application, the math is still very much in their favor. The rate is just compressed because their peers are so uniformly strong.

What this means for your student

If your student goes to Monta Vista High or Lynbrook High: the admit rate at the school is not your kid's individual admit rate. UC reads each student against the school's own profile. Top of the class with strong courses and a real application — they have great chances at multiple UCs. Don't let the school's average rate make you panic, and don't let it make you over-apply to safeties. The 36-to-39 percent rate at your school is mostly a story about the extraordinary strength and concentration of the applicant pool, not about your kid's chances individually. Students from Monta Vista and Lynbrook are still getting in.

If your student goes to Cupertino High or Homestead High: this data is genuinely encouraging. Your school is producing admit rates at or above the more famous Fremont Union names. UC reads your kid's profile in context — being a standout at Cupertino High is a meaningful signal. Don't let anyone tell you a Cupertino address is second-tier.

If your student goes to Saratoga High or Los Gatos High: the rates here — 34 percent and 31 percent — sit just below the Fremont Union cluster. Saratoga High in particular has an extremely rigorous academic environment, which means UC reads that context very carefully. A 34 percent rate at a school with Saratoga's academic intensity isn't the same as a 34 percent rate at a school with a more varied applicant pool.

If your student goes to Los Altos High, Mountain View High, Prospect High, or Fremont High in Sunnyvale: all four of these schools are sending solid numbers of kids to UC at rates between 34 and 39 percent. Prospect High is a name that rarely comes up in South Bay parent conversations about UC, but 39 percent is an impressive rate. Mountain View High and Los Altos High each have over 2,000 applicants — these are substantial pipelines, not exceptions.

For everyone: spend ten minutes with your child’s actual school in our UC dashboard. Look at the year-over-year trend. Look at which specific UC campuses your school sends the most kids to. That's a much better list-building starting point than neighborhood rankings or which district everyone says is "the best."

A few honest cautions

These are average rates, not your child's odds. UC reads each application individually. The same school's top-quarter and bottom-quarter students have very different admission chances. A 41 percent school-wide rate doesn't mean 41 percent of the senior class is getting into UC — it means 41 percent of the students who chose to apply got in.

Private schools are not in this data. Bellarmine College Preparatory, Archbishop Mitty, Notre Dame San Jose, Sacred Heart Preparatory, Saint Francis High in Mountain View, The Harker School, and Presentation High are all excluded from this dataset. These schools send a real number of kids to UC, but the UC Information Center suppresses school-level data when fewer than five students from a given school apply to a given campus. We're planning a separate post on Bay Area private schools.

The spread within this region is genuinely narrow. Thirty-one to 41 percent is a tight range for ten schools. The ordering can shift by a point or two from year to year — don't read too much into the precise rank of any one school.

Did you know? More Novato High seniors got into UC last year than seniors at Tam, Redwood, or Archie Williams — at least when you compare the percentages.

Novato High's UC admit rate in the most recent published cycle: 36 percent. Tam: 33 percent. Redwood: 30 percent. Archie Williams (formerly Drake): 28 percent.

That's the kind of number that makes a Mill Valley or Larkspur parent stop and wonder. So before we go any further: this is not bad news for Tam Union families. We promise. By the end of this post you'll see exactly why these numbers don't mean what they might look like. But you're a parent and you deserve the actual data, so here it is.

This is the third post in our six-week regional series. Every week we're walking through one Bay Area region, naming the public and charter high schools, and showing you what the UC numbers actually say. Today it is about Marin County.

Marin County public high schools, ranked

This is every public high school in Marin County that we have UC data on, ranked by UC admit rate in the most recent published cycle (Fall 2025 — students who started college this past fall).

A few things probably jumped out:

The two Novato Unified schools — Novato High and San Marin — bracket the list, with Novato High on top.
The three big Tamalpais Union schools — Tam, Redwood, and Archie Williams — are in the middle to bottom , despite their reputations as Marin's "premier" public high schools.
Tam and Redwood together account for nearly half of all UC applicants in Marin County (2,645 of the county's roughly 5,400 applicants). When two schools dominate the application volume that much, their admit rates also dominate the conversation — but they're not necessarily the highest.
Tamiscal and Tomales are smaller schools where the data is much noisier — treat those rates as approximations.

This is real. It's also not what most Marin families assume. So let's talk about why.

Why the "good schools" admit rates are lower

Here's the thing that a UC reviewer does that most don't: they read every application in context.

When a student applies to a UC from Tam or Redwood, the UC reviewer sees the school profile. They see that these schools offer 18 to 22 AP courses. They see that the average senior took 4 to 6 APs. They see that nearly every senior is college-bound, that most have parents with graduate degrees, and that the schools spend well above the state average per pupil. A UC reviewer evaluates the student’s transcript against that environment.

When a kid applies from Novato High or Terra Linda, the UC reviewer sees a school with a more mixed student profile. Strong AP offerings, but a more diverse range of post-high-school plans. A wider mix of family backgrounds. The UC reviewer reads that transcript against that environment too.

It's not that the UC is grading Tam kids harder. It's that they are asking: did this student maximize what was in front of them? At a school with 22 AP courses and where almost every classmate is taking 3, "maximizing" means something different than at a school with 14 APs and a more varied senior class. At a school where two-thirds of parents have graduate degrees, "first generation" means something different than at a school where most families went to college but not graduate school.

The math of it: when you take a high-performing applicant pool from Tam or Redwood — where most students meet the basic UC bar and many far exceed it — and run them through holistic review where the school's strong profile is "expected" rather than "exceptional," the admit rate compresses. When you take a slightly more variable applicant pool from Novato or Terra Linda, where strong applications stand out more relative to the school's profile, the admit rate stretches.

This is not bad news for Tamalpais Union families. It's actually how UC has worked since 1996, when California banned race-based admissions and UC leaned harder into family income, school profile, and first-generation status as the things they could legally consider.

What about kids actually getting in? Here's a number that does not show up on the rankings list. Tam sent 451 students to UC last year. Novato High sent 172. In raw counts, Tam is sending more than two-and-a-half times as many to UC as Novato High, every single year. Redwood sent 378. Archie Williams sent 176. Terra Linda sent 217.

The Tamalpais Union schools are still sending the most Marin kids to a UC by far. Their admit rates just look lower because their applicant pools are so much larger and so consistently strong that fewer of them stand out as exceptional in UC's reading. But the actual number of admits per school — the students who walk across the stage with a UC offer — is still concentrated at the schools you'd expect.

Translated: if you're a Tam or Redwood parent and your student is in the top half of the class, takes hard courses, and writes a thoughtful application, the math is still very much on their side. The rate is just compressed.

What this means for your student

If your student goes to Tam, Redwood, or Archie Williams: the admit rate at the school is not your kid's individual admit rate. The UC evaluator reads each applicant against the school's profile. Top of the class with strong courses and a real application — they have great chances at multiple UCs. Don't let the school's average rate make you panic, and don't let it make you over-apply to safeties. The 28-to-33 percent rate at your school is mostly a story about the strength and size of the applicant pool, not about your kid's individual chance.

If your student goes to Novato High, San Marin, Terra Linda, or San Rafael High: the data shows your school's applicants are getting in at strong rates — and in the case of Novato and Terra Linda, higher rates than the bigger Tam Union schools. The UC reviewer reads your kid's profile in the context of your school. Don't undersell what's possible. Focus on the individual application, not the district's reputation.

If your student goes to Tamiscal or Tomales: these are small enough that the rates jump around year to year. Tamiscal had 110 applicants in the most recent cycle; Tomales had only 30 (and we're using Fall 2024 data because Fall 2025 was suppressed). Treat the school rate as a rough guide, and focus on your kid's individual profile, the courses they've taken, and the strength of their application.

For everyone: spend ten minutes with your actual high school in our dashboard. Look at the year-over-year trend. Look at which UCs your school sends the most students to. That's a much better list-building starting point than national rankings or which district everyone says is "the best."

Year ranges matter. The numbers here are for the most recent published cycle, students who started at UC in fall 2025. UC publishes this data with about a 12-month lag, so this is the freshest school-level data available. Tomales is the one exception — fewer than 5 Tomales seniors applied to UC in the Fall 2025 cycle, so we used the prior year's data.

Smaller schools have noisier data. Tamiscal (110 applicants) and Tomales (30 applicants) have much more year-to-year volatility than Tam (1,370 applicants). Treat the smaller-school rates as approximations.

Did you know? More College Park seniors got into UC last year than seniors at Campolindo or Miramonte — at least when you compare the percentages. College Park's UC admit rate in the most recent published cycle: 37 percent. Miramonte: 32 percent. Campolindo: 32 percent. Acalanes: 33 percent.

That's the kind of number that makes a Lamorinda parent stop and think. Especially if you bought your house specifically to be in the Acalanes Union school district with high academic expectations. So before we go any further: this is not bad news for Acalanes-district families. We promise.

By the end of this post you'll understand why these numbers don't mean what they look like on the surface. You're a parent and you deserve the actual data, so here it is. This is the second post in our six-week regional series. Today: Lamorinda — Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda — plus several nearby Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill schools.

Lamorinda and Walnut Creek high schools, ranked

This is every public high school we have UC data on, in the Acalanes Union and Mt. Diablo Unified districts that serve Lamorinda and central Contra Costa, ranked by UC admit rate in the most recent published cycle (Fall 2025 — kids who started college this past fall).

A few things probably jumped out:

The two Mt. Diablo Unified schools — College Park and Northgate — top the list. They're not the ones most families assume are the strongest UC pipelines.
The three "name-brand" Acalanes Union schools — Campolindo, Miramonte, Acalanes — are at the bottom of the list , all within a single point of each other.
Las Lomas, also in Acalanes Union, sits between the two clusters at 34 percent.

This is real. It's also not what most families in Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda assume — many of whom paid a real estate premium specifically for the Acalanes district. So let's talk about why.

Here's a number that does not show up on the rankings list. Miramonte sent 365 kids to a UC last year. College Park sent 283. In raw counts, Miramonte is sending more kids to UC every single year than College Park. Campolindo sent 345. Acalanes sent 302. Las Lomas sent 380.

The Acalanes Union schools are still sending more kids to UC schools by sheer count, because they have larger and more uniformly strong applicant pools. Their admit rate looks lower because the pool is so consistently strong that fewer of them stand out as exceptional in UC's reading. But the actual number of admits per school — the kids who walk across the stage and get a UC sticker — is still concentrated at the schools you'd expect.

Translated: if you're a Campolindo or Miramonte parent and your student is in the top half of the class, takes hard courses, and writes a thoughtful application, the math is still very much on their side. The rate is just compressed.

What this means for your kid

Students from Campolindo, Miramonte, or Acalanes: the admit rate at the school is not your student’s individual admit rate. The UC’s read each applicant against the school's own profile. Top of the class with strong courses and a real application — they have great chances at multiple UCs. Don't let the school's average rate make you panic, and don't let it make you over-apply to safeties. The mid-30s rate at your school is mostly a story about the strength and uniformity of the applicant pool, not about your child’s individual chances.

Students from Las Lomas: you're in an interesting middle position. The same Acalanes Union district as the Lamorinda three, but with a slightly more diverse student body and a slightly higher admit rate. Read the data both ways — your kid is in a strong school environment but the pool is less uniformly elite.

Students from College Park or Northgate: the data shows your school's applicants are getting in at strong rates, often higher than the more famous neighbors. UC reads the student profile in the context of your school. Don't undersell what's possible — Mt. Diablo Unified sends real numbers to a UC every year. Focus on the individual application, not the district's reputation.

Year-over-year variation is small but real. The differences between Campolindo, Miramonte, and Acalanes are within a couple of points, which means the order can shuffle slightly year to year. The bigger pattern — Mt. Diablo schools above, Acalanes Union schools clustered just below — has been stable across multiple recent cycles.

That’s the kind of number that makes a Paly or Gunn parent stop and wonder. So before we go any further: this is not bad news for Paly and Gunn families. We promise. All 25 Peninsula and Palo Alto high schools, ranked

This is every public and charter high school we have UC data on, in San Mateo County plus Palo Alto Unified, ranked by their UC admit rate in the most recent published cycle (students who started in Fall 2025).

A few things probably jumped out:

The big affluent-zip-code schools — Paly, Gunn, M-A, Carlmont — are in the middle to bottom of this list.
The schools that serve more working-class and immigrant communities — Mills, Aragon, Hillsdale, South SF, Half Moon Bay — are at the top.
Sequoia Union’s district average is 32 percent, the lowest of any Peninsula district , even though it includes M-A, Carlmont, Sequoia, and Woodside — schools with strong reputations.

This is real. It’s also not what most families assume. So let’s talk about why.

When a student applies to a UC from Paly or Gunn, the UC reviewer sees the school profile. They see that Paly offers 30 AP courses. They see that the average Paly senior took 4 to 6 APs. They see that nearly every senior at Paly is college-bound, that most have parents with graduate degrees, and that the school spends roughly twice the per-pupil amount that a Title I school spends. UC reviewers read the individual transcript against that environment.

When a student applies from Half Moon Bay High, the UC reviewer sees a school in a more rural, more mixed-income setting. Fewer AP courses available. A more diverse range of post-high-school plans. The evaluator reads the transcript against that unique environment too.

It’s not that the UC reviewer is grading Paly kids harder. It’s that they are asking: did this student maximize what was in front of them? At a school with 30 APs, “maximizing” means something different than at a school with 8. At a school where two-thirds of the parents have college degrees, “first generation” means something different than at a school where most kids are the first in their family to apply.

The bottom line: when you take a high-performing applicant pool from Paly (most kids meet the basic UC bar) and run them through holistic review where the school’s strong profile is “expected” rather than “exceptional,” the admit rate compresses. When you take a smaller, more variable applicant pool from Half Moon Bay where doing well stands out more relative to the school’s profile, the admit rate stretches.

This is not bad news for affluent-zip-code families. It’s actually how the UC evaluation has worked since 1996, when California banned race-based admissions and reviewers leaned harder into family income, school profile, and first-generation status as the things they could legally weigh.

What students are actually getting in?

Here’s a number that does not show up on the rankings list. Paly sent 738 students to UC last year. Mills sent 396. In raw counts, Paly is sending more than twice as many kids to a UC as Mills. Gunn sent 729. Carlmont sent 721.

The big affluent-zip-code schools are still sending the most kids to a UC by far. Their admit rate looks lower because their applicant pool is much larger and so consistently strong that fewer of them stand out as exceptional in the UC’s reading. But the actual number of admits per school is still concentrated at the schools you’d expect.

Translated: if you’re a Paly or Gunn parent and your student is in the top half of the class, takes hard courses, and writes a thoughtful application, the math is still very much on their side. The rate is just compressed.

What this means for you

If your child goes to Paly, Gunn, Carlmont, M-A, Sequoia, or Burlingame: UC reviewers read each student against their school’s own profile. Top of the class with strong courses and a real application — they have great chances at multiple UCs. Don’t let the school’s average rate make you panic, and don’t let it make you over-apply to safeties.

If your child goes to Mills, Aragon, Hillsdale, South SF, Half Moon Bay, Oceana, Westmoor, or one of the higher-rate schools: the data shows your school’s students are getting admitted at strong rates. UC reviewers will read their profile in the context of your school. Don’t undersell what’s possible.

If your child goes to Tide, Terra Nova, Jefferson, or Menlo-Atherton: the rates here vary for different reasons. M-A draws from East Palo Alto and Atherton — wildly different profiles within one school, which compresses the average. Tide and Terra Nova are smaller schools where the data is less stable year to year. Look at your student’s individual profile, not the school average.

For everyone: spend ten minutes with your student’s high school in our dashboard. Look at the year-over-year trend. Look at which UCs your school sends the most kids to. That’s a much better list-building starting point than national rankings.

A few honest cautions

These are average rates, not your student’s odds. UCs read each application individually. The same school’s top-quarter and bottom-quarter students have very different admit chances.

Private schools are mostly not in this data. UCs suppress school-level data when fewer than 5 students apply, which excludes most private schools from this dataset. We’re working on a separate post for Peninsula private schools.

Year ranges matter. The numbers here are for the most recent published cycle, students who started at a UC in the Fall of 2025. UCs publish data with a 12-month lag, so this is the freshest school-level information available.

Smaller schools have noisier data. Tide Academy (126 applicants) has more year-to-year volatility than Carlmont (2,286 applicants). Treat the smaller-school rates as approximations.

The 10 Bay Area High Schools That Climbed the Most in UC Admit Rates Since 2019

Did you know? In 2019, Mission High School in San Francisco sent 166 kids to a UC. They had 605 seniors apply. That’s a 27% admit rate.

In 2025? Same school, same neighborhood, basically the same number of applicants: 327 admits out of 600. 55%. The admit rate doubled in six years.

We pulled the most recently published UC data on every Bay Area high school since 2019; Mission isn’t alone. There are ten Bay Area schools whose UC admit rates climbed by 25 points or more in 6 years, and the pattern says something important about what a UC actually rewards.

Here are the schools, ranked by how much their admit rates climbed:

The 10 Biggest Climbers, 2019 to 2025

If you’re looking at this list and noticing something — yes. Seven of the ten high schools are in Oakland or San Francisco. Most of them are schools that serve a high percentage of students from immigrant families, kids who are the first in their family to go to college, or English learners. A few are charters. One is a medical career academy in Antioch, another is in Pacifica.

What you do not see on this list: a single high school in Atherton, Palo Alto, Lafayette, Cupertino, or any other affluent zip code.

That’s not an accident.

Why the climbers look like this

Schools don’t suddenly become better academically in six short years. So what changed?

UC reviewers read applications differently than many parents realize. They don’t just look at GPA and test scores against a statewide bar. They read every application against the high school it came from. They look at what classes the school actually offered and how many graduating seniors usually go to college. They also review other factors like family income, whether a student is first gen and if English is the first language at home.

This is called holistic review, and after California banned race-based admissions in 1996 (Prop 209), UCs leaned harder into looking at every piece of context available to them.

So when a student graduates from MetWest in Oakland with a strong GPA, took the hardest classes their school offered, and is the first in their family applying to college, UC reads that very differently than the same GPA from an applicant coming from a high school where every senior takes 8 AP courses and both parents went to grad school. It’s not because the UC is grading on a curve, but they’re trying to figure out who actually maximized what they had access to.

The climbers list is what happens when UC’s contextual reading meets a generation of motivated students at schools that didn’t previously send a lot of seniors to a UC. The applicants didn’t change – UC’s understanding of them got sharper.

What this actually means

If your child goes to a high school like the ones on this climbers list, the takeaway is simple: their admit chances are real, and the school’s profile is part of what UC sees as a strength, not a weakness. Apply.

If your student goes to a highly competitive Bay Area school — Paly, Gunn, Mitty, M-A, Lowell, Lynbrook — the takeaway is different but just as important. These admit rates reflect how UC reads context, not just how strong the individual applicant is. These students should do the most they can with what their school offers, then write an application that shows who they are. UC will read it in context.

If they are somewhere in between — and most are — the data on the dashboard is worth a slow look. Find your school. Review the trend over six years and notice which UCs the school sends the most students to. That’s an extremely valuable starting point for building a college list.

A few honest cautions

These are average rates, not any specific student’s odds. UC reviewers read each application individually. A kid at the top of their class at any school we listed has very different chances than a kid in the middle of their class at the same school.

Climbing admit rates do not equal more total admits. Some schools climbed because their applicant pool got smaller (UC suppresses school-level data when fewer than 5 students apply, so we filter to 50+ apps). Mission High actually had nearly the same number of applicants in both years and almost double the admits, which is the cleanest version of this story. But others on the list could partially reflect changes in who chose to apply.

This is correlation, not magic. Going to MetWest does not mean your kid will get a 43 percent UC admit rate. It means kids at MetWest, on average, with their school context and applications, are getting in at that rate. Different kid, different application, different result.

When to Submit Your SAT or ACT Score (And When You Shouldn’t)

College testing policies are shifting again. Several highly selective colleges — including Cornell, Penn, Harvard, and Georgetown — have moved back to requiring test scores. Many Southern schools are moving in this direction as well. Meanwhile, the University of California and California State University systems remain test-blind, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not used in admissions decisions. The full list of colleges that require the SAT, ACT can be found College Board’s website (see link here) .

But the vast majority of colleges now sit in the middle: test optional.

The real question families ask us at StrivePath is:

“Are test-optional schools actually test-optional?”

The answer depends on the data — specifically, a college’s Common Data Set (“CDS”).

Below, we walk through how to evaluate a college’s testing policy, how to tell whether a “test-optional” school actually wants scores, and how to decide whether your student should submit theirs.

How to Tell If a “Test Optional” School Truly Is Test Optional

Every college publishes a Common Data Set each year. This document contains admissions data, academic expectations, and — most importantly for our purposes — how the college actually uses standardized test scores.

To evaluate whether a school is truly test optional, look at two CDS sections:

1. Section C7 — How Important Are Standardized Test Scores?

This table shows whether test scores are:

Very Important
Important
Considered
Not Considered

2. Section C9 — What % of Enrolled Students Submitted SAT/ACT Scores?

This is the real indicator. If a large majority of enrolled students submitted scores, then the school expects them — even if they claim otherwise.

Below are three examples which illustrate this.

Example 1: Amherst College — Test Optional? Not Really.

Amherst publicly states it is test optional, but their CDS tells a different story.

Section C7 shows standardized test scores are rated as “Very Important” — alongside rigor, GPA, essays, extracurriculars, and recommendations.

Section C9 shows 61% of enrolled students submitted an SAT or ACT score.

When more than half of enrolled students submitted scores, the school is not functionally test optional.

Conclusion: Amherst is test optional in policy, but not in practice.

Example 2: Northwestern University — “Considered,” But…

Northwestern labels SAT/ACT scores as only “considered” on Section C7. That suggests a lighter touch than Amherst.

But the enrollment data on Section C9 shows:

Nearly 70% of enrolled students submitted a score.

Again, the behavior of admitted students contradicts the stated policy.

Conclusion: Northwestern is more flexible than Amherst — but still not truly test optional.

Example 3: Oregon State — A Genuine Test Optional School

Now compare the data for Oregon State:

Section C7 also “considers” test scores.

Section C9 shows that only 14% of enrolled students submitted a score.

That’s a completely different landscape from Amherst or Northwestern.

Conclusion: Oregon State is truly test optional. Students are not penalized for omitting scores.

The Rule of Thumb: Selectivity Drives Test Expectations

Across the hundreds of schools we’ve analyzed at StrivePath, one pattern is clear:

In most cases, the more selective the college, the less “optional” the SAT/ACT truly is.

At highly selective schools:

High-performing applicants tend to submit scores.
Lower-scoring applicants tend to omit them.
This drives the reported 25th–75th percentile range higher each year.
Admissions teams know this — and still use the test as a “double check” on academic performance.

Which brings us to the most common question we get:

Should I Submit My Score If It’s Below the 25th–75th Percentile?

1. For less selective, truly test-optional colleges:

If the % of enrolled students submitting a score is low, then:

Don’t submit if your score is below the 25th percentile.
Do submit if your score meets or beats the school’s merit-aid threshold.

At these colleges, standardized testing plays a minor role in admissions but may unlock scholarships.

2. For selective colleges:

The answer becomes more nuanced.

Selective admissions officers use test scores to confirm the academic record, not replace it.

If:

the student has a strong transcript,
took the SAT/ACT at least three times,
and followed a structured study plan,

Then, we often advise students to submit even if they fall below the 25th percentile.

Why?

Because the 25th–75th percentile ranges are inflated by self-selection. Only students with high scores submit them, pushing the averages up.

Admissions teams understand this dynamic — and often prefer an imperfect score over no score at all.

Final Recommendations

1. Always read the college’s Common Data Set.

Sections C7 and C9 reveal what’s really happening behind the scenes.

2. The more selective the school, the more your SAT/ACT score matters.

Even when they say it’s optional.

3. If you’ve prepared properly and tested three times, consider submitting your score — even if it’s below the published range.

Especially for selective colleges.

Families who follow these principles make far more strategic decisions about whether to submit scores — and give their students the strongest possible application.

Bay Area UC Admit Rates by County: Outliers, Trends, and What Best Predicts the Gap

A few numbers surprised us this cycle.

San Francisco County’s aggregate UC admit rate is 39.3% — the highest in the Bay Area. Marin’s is 31.5% — the lowest. That’s nearly an 8-percentage-point gap between two counties less than 25 miles apart, both with strong public school systems and well-resourced families.

But the county-level number is just the surface. When we dig deeper, we find that every county has schools that outperform their county average and schools that underperform it — sometimes dramatically.

We pulled school-level admit rates from the UC Information Center for the most recent published cycle (UC publishes school-level data ~12 months after enrollment) for students who graduated from high school in 2025. Across 278 Bay Area public and charter high schools, 225 had 50 or more UC applicants and qualified for rate comparisons.

The full school-by-school dashboard is embedded near the bottom of this post.

This is about patterns , not cause and effect. We’re looking at trends in acceptance rates —we’re not saying a school made a student get in or not. Students ultimately control their own results. The data just shows the overall picture.

County summary: aggregate UC admit rate, plus rate by campus

The full 9-county × 9-campus breakdown for 2025:

A few non-obvious patterns:

UC Merced and UC Riverside admit roughly 9 in 10 applicants from every Bay Area county. Those two campuses are not highly selective at the county level anywhere in the Bay.
UC Berkeley and UCLA are uniformly tough across the region. UCB rates range from 6.9% (Solano) to 13.7% (SF). UCLA hovers between 7.8% and 9.6%. The county doesn’t move those numbers much — they’re driven by individual student profiles, not geography.
Marin’s UCLA rate (9.6%) is the highest among Bay Area counties. That’s worth remembering as you read the rest of this post — Marin doesn’t underperform at every UC; the overall difference shows up at UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Berkeley specifically.
UC Irvine’s rates vary the most by county — 2.3% in Napa, 25.8% in San Francisco. Smaller applicant pools by county likely explain this swing.

Outliers: schools that beat or miss their county average

For every county, we identified the two schools furthest above the county aggregate rate and the two furthest below. (Schools with fewer than 50 UC applicants in 2025 are excluded)

Two patterns stand out:

The “above county average” outliers tend to be Title I schools, charter schools serving lower-income communities, and international/newcomer-focused schools. Mission HS in SF, Oakland Charter, James Lick (East Side Union), Making Waves Academy in Richmond, Aspire Lionel Wilson in Oakland, San Francisco International — all of these serve student populations where UC’s holistic review framework explicitly weighs school context, family income, and first-generation status.

The “below county average” outliers tend to be alternative, continuation, independent-study, or new schools. Independence (SFUSD continuation), Tamiscal (Tam Union independent-study), Tide (less than a year old), Invictus, Milpitas Middle College — these are not traditional comprehensive high schools, and their admit rates reflect program design and applicant-pool composition, not the academic strength of any individual student.

If you only read the bottom of the list as “weak schools,” you misread the data. Several of these are programs designed for students on different paths.

Which way of grouping schools best predicts the gap?

A natural question: which type of school consistently outperforms the average, and which underperforms? We tested three different groupings to see which has the strongest correlation with admit rate.

School district is roughly twice as strong a predictor as program type, and ~17× stronger than size. Of the three lenses, the district a school belongs to explains the most variance in its UC admit rate. Districts are bundles of demographic mix, course catalogs, college-counseling resources, neighborhood context, and student composition. So “where a school sits” predicts its rate better than “what type of school it is” or “how big it is.”

The top and bottom districts:

Highest aggregate UC admit rate by district: - San Francisco Unified — 39.3% (16 schools) - Fremont Unified (Alameda) — 38.8% (6 schools) - Hayward Unified — 38.7% (5 schools) - San Lorenzo Unified — 38.5% (3 schools) - Napa Valley Unified — 38.4% (4 schools)

Lowest aggregate UC admit rate by district: - Tamalpais Union High (Marin) — 30.5% (4 schools) - Sequoia Union High (Peninsula) — 32.1% (8 schools) - Acalanes Union High (Lamorinda) — 33.0% (4 schools) - Vallejo City Unified — 34.0% (4 schools) - Liberty Union High (East Contra Costa) — 34.1% (3 schools) - Palo Alto Unified — 34.3% (3 schools) - San Mateo Union High — 34.7% (7 schools)

The bottom of the list contains some of the most academically reputable, well-resourced public school districts in California — Tamalpais Union, Acalanes, Palo Alto Unified, San Mateo Union, Sequoia Union. The top of the list is dominated by districts with higher proportions of first-generation, lower-income, and English-learner students.

That’s the post-Prop 209 holistic review framework playing out. It is not a statement that students from Acalanes are “weaker” than students from Hayward Unified — applicant pools differ, course offerings aren’t consistent, and individual outcomes vary widely. At the district level, the pattern of who gets admitted looks different from what you’d expect based on typical school rankings. The system UC created after California Proposition 209 is the most likely reason we found for this.

What changed from 2019 to 2025?

Bay Area UC admits grew roughly 60% over the period. But the rate of growth wasn’t even.

Top 10 climbers (rate change from 2019 → 2025):

The climber list is striking: every one of the top 10 is a Title I, international/newcomer-focused, or charter school serving lower-income communities — clustered overwhelmingly in Oakland, San Francisco, and Richmond. Higher admission rates tend to show up in the same districts that already have the highest overall admission rates in 2025.

The decliner list is more mixed but skews toward schools whose 2019 rates were already at the high end and have drifted toward the regional median. Three of the top decliners (Terra Nova, Terra Linda, Liberty) come from districts now sitting in the bottom-rate group above.

What this means for families

The overall UC admission rate at your student’s school can be helpful—but only if you interpret it the right way.

District matters more than school type or school size. Two comprehensive public high schools in different districts can produce very different aggregate rates for reasons that have far more to do with applicant pool composition and how UC reads the school’s context than with the schools themselves.

Outliers within a county tell you more than the county average. Mission HS sitting 15 points above SF’s average and Independence HS sitting 24 points below it is a much more useful description of the SF landscape than “39.3%” alone.

Trend direction matters. A school whose rate climbed 25+ points since 2019 is a different story than one whose rate dropped 5 points. Both might be in your zip code. Take a look at the dashboard below.

What it doesn’t mean : the rate decides your outcome. UC looks at each student individually. School context is just one of many factors—UC Berkeley lists 13 in its review process. It’s something they consider, not the final decision maker.

A few final comments

Numbers matter. A school with 50 applicants and a 50% rate is not statistically equivalent to a school with 600 applicants and a 50% rate. Treat smaller-school numbers as rough estimates. The dashboard shows the denominator alongside every rate — review it.

Private schools are largely missing. UC doesn’t report data for schools with fewer than 5 applicants, which affects small private schools the most. Aggregate private-school admit rates are reported separately by the SF Chronicle’s private-school feature . Our dataset only includes public and charter schools.

Program type influences the rate. Continuation, alternative, independent-study, and brand-new schools can sit at the top or bottom of the rankings for reasons unrelated to academic preparation.

Correlation isn’t causation. This post is only showing patterns in the published data. Each student’s outcome depends on their own application, their choices, and a review process that considers context.

When most Bay Area families think about college planning, they think about junior or senior year. Maybe sophomore year if they're ahead of the curve. But the families who consistently report the least stress and the best outcomes? They started in 7th or 8th grade .

That might sound extreme. It isn't. And understanding why requires rethinking what 'college planning' actually means in the early years.

What College Planning in 7th Grade Is Not

It is not pressure. It is not a schedule of AP prep courses for a 12-year-old. It is not building a 'college resume' at an age when students should be discovering what they actually like.

The families who work with StrivePath starting in middle school are not putting their kids through an early college application simulation. They're doing something much simpler and much more effective.

What It Actually Is

Building habits before high school gets hard

The transition from middle to high school is one of the most challenging academic transitions students face. Suddenly there are AP courses, a GPA that counts, a much larger social environment, and significantly more independence.

Students who arrive at 9th grade with strong time management habits, clear study strategies, and a sense of how to advocate for themselves have a measurable advantage.

One of the frameworks we use with our middle school students is the 3 P's: Plan, Prioritize, and Protect. Planning means breaking big projects into manageable steps. Prioritizing means using tools like the Eisenhower Matrix to decide what actually needs attention first. Protecting time means recognizing that focus is a skill; one that can be developed and that not every notification, invitation, or distraction deserves a response.

These are the habits that separate students who thrive in a rigorous high school environment from students who feel perpetually behind.

Exploring interests before the stakes feel high

One of the most common challenges we see with students who start college planning in junior year is that they don't really know what they're interested in. They've been so focused on grades and test scores that they haven't had the space or the permission to genuinely explore.

Starting in 7th or 8th grade gives students years to try things: volunteer opportunities, competitions, clubs, summer programs, independent projects. Not to build a resume but to genuinely figure out what lights them up. By the time high school applications and extracurricular choices matter, they're making decisions from a place of actual self-knowledge rather than strategic guesswork.

Some of our current middle school students are exploring volunteer opportunities that match their emerging interests, researching summer programs, and learning what kinds of activities are available in their Bay Area community. None of this is forced. All of it is planting seeds that pay off over years.

Making better course selection decisions in 9th grade

The courses a student takes in 9th and 10th grade have a real impact on their options in 11th and 12th grade. A student who doesn't take algebra in 8th grade may not reach calculus by senior year. A student who drops a language in 9th grade may not meet the 'a-g' requirements for UC admissions. A student who overloads on AP courses in 9th grade and burns out is in a worse position than a student who paced themselves thoughtfully.

We work with 7th and 8th-grade students and their families to understand what high school course pathways look like and to make 9th-grade choices that open doors rather than close them.

What Bay Area Families Often Get Wrong About Early Planning

The most common objection we hear is: 'Isn't it too much pressure to think about college this early?'

The answer depends entirely on how early planning is done. Done poorly, yes.It's pressure without purpose. Done well, early planning is the thing that removes pressure. A student who knows what high school will look like, who has strong habits, and who is genuinely exploring their interests doesn't arrive at junior year panicking. They arrive having done the work gradually, over years, in a way that felt natural rather than forced.

Bay Area schools are competitive. The families who start intentionally early, not obsessively, but purposefully; these are the ones who describe the college process as manageable. The families who start late are the ones who describe it as a crisis.

But here's what most families don't realize until it's too late: the UC application is fundamentally different from the Common App, and students who treat it as an afterthought almost always produce essays that are too rushed to be genuinely competitive.

Understand How the UC System Actually Reviews Applications

The UC system uses a 'holistic review' process: meaning no single factor (GPA, test scores, essays) determines admission on its own. Each campus weighs factors somewhat differently, but broadly speaking, UC admissions considers:

Academic performance: GPA in 'a-g' courses, rigor of coursework, upward trends
No test scores: the UC system will still remain test blind for the SAT/ACT through 2026 admission cycle.

For Bay Area students, the academic bar is high. The Personal Insight Questions Are Your Most Important Tool: Use Them Well

Most Bay Area students spend their time worrying about GPA and test scores. The students who consistently beat expectations in UC admissions are the ones who write Personal Insight Questions that are genuinely specific, personal, and memorable.

Here's what we see most often go wrong with Bay Area student PIQs:

Writing about an activity rather than a person. 'I have been on the robotics team for three years' tells an admissions reader what you did, not who you are.
Being vague about impact. 'I learned a lot from this experience' is the least useful sentence in a college application.
Choosing the 'most impressive' prompt rather than the one with the best personal material. Students who try to sound impressive almost always sound like everyone else.
Starting too late to revise meaningfully. PIQs that were drafted in October and submitted in November are almost never as strong as PIQs that were drafted in June, revised in September, and polished in October.

Our recommendation: Begin drafting your PIQs no later than June of junior year , and share drafts with your StrivePath counselor over the summer. Arrive at senior year with 4–6 strong draft essays ready to refine, not to start.

Build a Balanced UC List: Don't Just Default to the Top Campuses

Bay Area students frequently build UC lists that are too top-heavy. Reach: UC Berkeley, UCLA (depending on major and profile)
Target: UC San Diego, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara

UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara in particular are genuinely strong schools that are slightly more accessible than Berkeley and LA for most Bay Area applicants. Students who get in early and enthusiastically explore these campuses often find them to be excellent fits.

Berkeley's 11% Admit Rate Is a Fiction — and It's Getting More Fictional Every Year

When parents see "UC Berkeley: 11% admit rate," they assume that's their student's odds. It's not. We pulled seven years of UC admissions data — every campus, every major, 2019 through 2025 — and the "Berkeley number" gets more useless with each passing cycle. In 2019, Berkeley Computer Science admitted 25% of applicants. By 2022, it admitted 4%. Meanwhile Berkeley Humanities moved the opposite direction: 13% in 2019, 25% in 2025.

Same campus. Same headline number. Wildly different realities underneath.

We get these questions all the time at StrivePath: What's my kid's chance at Berkeley? At UCLA? At Davis? Parents want a single number. Counselors give them the campus-wide admit rate. That number has always been misleading. It's now dangerously so — because the gap between the headline and the reality has widened every year since 2019.

Here's the 7-year picture.

The headline vs. the majors — 2025 snapshot

For the Fall 2025 class (the 2024–25 admissions cycle) , UC Berkeley admitted 14,360 freshmen out of 126,830 applicants

A kid applying to Berkeley Haas has a 5% shot. A kid applying to Berkeley Humanities has a 25% shot. Same campus, same year, five-times-different odds.

The trend is worse

Here's what's changed since 2019. Berkeley Computer Science, year by year:

Applicants more than doubled. Admits fell . The admit rate collapsed from 25% to 4% in three years, and hasn't meaningfully recovered.

Berkeley Arts & Humanities went the opposite direction:

Applicant volume climbed 50%, but admits nearly tripled . The admit rate almost doubled.

So between 2019 and 2025, the gap between the hardest door and the easiest door at Berkeley widened from ** 12 percentage points (13% vs 25%) to 20+ percentage points (4–5% vs 25% . If you're a 2026 applicant, the "which door" decision matters more than it did for the class that came before you, and significantly more than for the class before that.

UCLA flips the assumption

Most Bay Area families assume UCLA is "easier than Berkeley." For some majors, true. For others, the data flips:

UCLA Computer Science has been harder than Berkeley CS for most of the last 7 years:

2023 UCLA CS: 3% (368 admits from 11,938 apps)
2023 Berkeley CS: 4%
2025 UCLA CS: 7% | Berkeley CS: 6%

UCLA Humanities has stayed brutally selective while UCB's opened up:

2025 UCLA Humanities: 9%
2025 Berkeley Humanities: 25%

A student who wants to study Humanities has nearly three times better odds at Berkeley than at UCLA . The brand ranking most families anchor on doesn't survive contact with the major-level data.

What's actually going on

Three forces are driving the divergence:

UC went test-blind in 2021. No SAT, no ACT, no test scores at all. Applicants flooded in — especially to name-brand campuses and selective majors. The UC systemwide press release confirms systemwide freshman applications hit record highs multiple years in a row.
Tech-major gravity. CS and Engineering at UCB/UCLA/UCSD absorbed the surge disproportionately. Same admission slots, 2–3× the applicant pool.
UC made space in Humanities and broader majors. Not because those programs got less competitive academically — but because the applicant pool for them didn't grow nearly as fast, and UC expanded capacity where it could.

Net result: the 11% campus average is now the weighted mean of a handful of single-digit-admit majors and a handful of 20%+ majors, with very little in between. The average is a fiction in the true statistical sense — it describes no actual applicant's experience.

What this actually means for your student

Your "reach / target / safety" spreadsheet is probably wrong. If you're categorizing Berkeley as a reach because the overall rate is 11%, but your student wants CS, the real rate at that door is 6%. That's not a reach — it's a long shot. Meanwhile, if the same student is genuinely open to Humanities, 25% is a genuine target.
Yield data tells you where students actually want to be. Students admitted to both Berkeley CS and UCLA CS overwhelmingly pick Berkeley — UCB CS yield is 63% vs UCLA CS at 28%. The brand-level difference between UCLA and Berkeley isn't real at the campus level; it is real at the major level, and only for some majors.
"Undeclared" at Berkeley was 12% in 2025 — a door. Two percentage points easier than the headline rate. Every year we see students who could have gotten in through a broader path chase a 5–7% major instead.

The guardrail — and we mean this

Let's be crystal clear: this is not a "game the system" argument . Do not apply to Berkeley Humanities planning to transfer into Haas or CS. UC internal transfers between colleges are harder than external admissions in most cases — Haas internal transfer acceptance typically runs below 10% , and the CS major in Letters & Sciences is similarly gated. UC has documented how the internal transfer process works, and for selective majors it is not a back door.

What this data is for: helping your student pick a major that reflects who they actually are, and understanding the real competitive landscape they're entering.

The result: personal and specific essays are more valuable than ever, and generic, polished writing is being flagged more often. Lamorinda students who tend to be strong academic writers are well-positioned here, but only if they focus on telling honest, personal stories instead of trying to make their writing sound perfect.

CSU Direct Admission creates new options

Through California's CSU Direct Admission Program, eligible students can receive automatic admission to certain CSU campuses based on their high school academic performance, without completing a traditional application. For some Lamorinda students, this may change their college list approach: certain CSU campuses now have a clearer, earlier pathway, which can free up time and energy to work on applications for reach and target schools. What Hasn't Changed for Lamorinda Students

Despite shifting policies, the basic components of a strong college application remain the same and Lamorinda students have consistently strong fundamentals.

Academic rigor matters. Campolindo, Miramonte, and Acalanes offer robust AP and honors courses. Selective colleges want to see students challenging themselves, not just taking the path of least resistance.

First, it’s important to start with academic planning. Water polo coaches, like those in other NCAA sports, look for athletes who can handle both the demands of the sport and rigorous academics. Your son should work on maintaining a strong GPA, especially in key subjects like math and science. College coaches will begin evaluating academic fit midway through his junior year, so ensuring a solid academic foundation is key.

Next, we recommend he start building a list of potential colleges based on his academic interests, geographic preferences, and water polo programs. Schools like Emory even score applicants on their IC, helping admissions committees decide whether to admit a student. In contrast, larger public schools may place less emphasis on IC, focusing more on grades and test scores.

So, how can your son demonstrate intellectual curiosity? It’s about making thoughtful choices in course selection, essays, recommendations, and extracurriculars. Question: My son is a rising senior at Miramonte. He plans to apply to public and private schools. When should he start writing his application essays? And do you have any tips?

Answer: The best time to start writing is a week or two after school lets out–so he should get started ASAP! However, if he wants to write his Common App essay on an activity he’s doing this summer, he should wait until the summer ends before beginning that essay. Instead, he should work on his UC essays.

Tip 1 and 2: Use Specific Details and the List of Three!

Specific details–about what you are, what people actually said , what you thought, how you actually changed–make the essay! The Rule of Three involves using three adjectives or three examples to add depth and vividness to descriptions.

Vague: I learned a lot during my internship.
Specific: My internship honed my skills in graphics , newsletters , and UX design .
Vague: My two students improved in algebra.
Specific: I saw an upward trend in their understanding of functions , solving of equations , and comprehension of many other topics .

Tip 3: Work on Essays One at a Time!

Students run out of creative juice or mana when writing essays consecutively. To achieve better results, students should mostly complete their essay (90%+) before starting a new one. Also, as students revise, rewrite, and integrate feedback, their writing will improve and the next essay will be better written. Don’t rush the writing process but…

Tip 4: Stick to a Schedule.

As you will need to write four total essays (for the UC application), try to finish each essay in 2-4 weeks. If you procrastinate, you might not have time to share your essays with family, friends, and teachers.

Tip 5: Share Your Essays with Others but Use Feedback Wisely.

Don’t use all of their feedback! Your uncle (who went to Harvard Law) might tell you that your second paragraph is awesome while your chemistry teacher suggests you trash it. Who’s right? Share it with a few more people and triangulate! Maybe the second paragraph is great but could use a few tweaks.

In the end, trust your gut. Many editors want to do a great job and will over-edit your essay. Don’t let other people take over your essays!

For instance, California state universities (CSUs), university colleges (UCs), and community colleges have adopted a test-blind policy—this means they don't look at standardized test scores at all! If you're only applying to these schools, spending time and money on tests is not valuable.
When you have below average test scores. The COVID-19 pandemic led to an inflation of test scores with many students only submitting high scores. If your scores are not competitive, submitting them might not benefit your application.

What Is The Best Way To Prepare For SAT?

If there's one thing you should consider when preparing for the SAT and ACT, it's timing. Here’s how you can stay on track:

Start Early

Kick off your prep in the summer after your sophomore year. Starting early gives you plenty of time to get familiar with the test format and figure out your strengths and weaknesses.
