College Visits 101: How to Make the Most of Campus Tours

Deciding what college to attend is a major milestone, and campus visits are one of the best ways to find the right fit. Websites and brochures are helpful, but nothing compares to seeing a school in person. Use these proven college visit tips to make the most of your experience.

1. Prepare Before Your College Tour

  • Research the school: Review majors, academic programs, and extracurriculars.
  • Schedule your visit: Go when classes are in session for the most authentic experience.
  • Make a question list: Ask about class sizes, career services, study abroad programs, and housing options.

2. Be Engaged During the Campus Tour

  • Talk to your guide: Ask about professors, campus traditions, and what they love about the school.
  • Pay attention to facilities: Check out classrooms, dorms, dining halls, and labs.
  • Observe student life: Do students look engaged, friendly, and excited to be there?

3. Explore Beyond the Official Tour

The guided tour is just the beginning. To truly know if a campus feels like home:

  • Eat in the dining hall to sample food quality.
  • Visit the library, gym, or student union to see daily life in action.
  • Walk through nearby neighborhoods to get a sense of safety and community.
  • Visit in the winter months (especially in the Northeast or Midwest)!
  • Start up a conversation with students on campus
  • Sit in on a lecture if possible; many schools are ok with this.

4. Capture and Compare Your Impressions

With multiple
college tours, details blur quickly.

  • Take notes and photos during each visit.
  • Rank priorities: Which schools best match your academic, social, and financial needs?

5. Follow Up After the Visit

  • Send a thank-you email to the admissions office or tour guide.
  • Reach out to students or faculty you met to stay connected.
  • Review your notes with family when making your final decision.

Final Thoughts

Campus visits are more than sightseeing; they’re about discovering where you’ll thrive. By preparing well, asking smart questions, and reflecting afterward, you’ll leave each tour confident about whether that school is the right choice for you.
