Coastal OC's Rankings Just Landed. Here's What Laguna, Corona del Mar, and Huntington Beach Actually Show

US News released the 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings on August 18th. Coastal Orange County is a mix: a few very high-ranked small-district schools, a few big competitive comprehensive schools, and a bunch of solid options in the California top 300. The corridor is one of the most stable regions in the state in terms of year-over-year college outcomes.

Quick methodology check. US News ranked about 18,000 public high schools nationally out of 27,000. Six factors were included: college readiness (30%, mostly AP participation and pass rates), state test scores (40% combined), curriculum breadth (10%), graduation rate (10%), underserved-student performance (10%). Data is from 2023-24; California had 1,678 schools ranked.

Laguna Beach is the coastal anchor

Laguna Beach High School ranks #76 in California. With less than 1,000 students, it's a relatively small school in the small Laguna Beach Unified School District, offering a more intimate, relationship-driven environment and a strong sense of community.

If you're comparing Laguna with other South OC communities for a home purchase, the ranking tells only part of the story. Laguna's smaller school environment and distinct culture offer a different experience from the larger comprehensive high schools farther inland. For families, understanding that day-to-day experience can be just as important as the ranking itself.

Corona del Mar and the Newport-Mesa schools

  • Corona Del Mar High School ranks among California's top 200 high schools and is a key academic option for families on the Newport Beach side. With strong AP participation, graduation outcomes, and college preparation, it offers a well-established path to higher education.
  • Newport Harbor High School provides another comprehensive public high school option within the district, serving the Newport Beach community.

Huntington Beach's schools

The Huntington Beach Union High School District offers several public high school options along the coastal corridor, each with its own strengths

  • Fountain Valley High School ranks among California's top 120 high schools. Its strong college-preparatory program includes a broad range of AP courses across subjects, giving students opportunities to pursue advanced coursework and build a challenging academic schedule.
  • Huntington Beach High School ranks among California's top 350. The school has an established performing arts program, making it an option for students who want to balance college preparation with creative interests.
  • Edison High School rounds out the district's coastal options, offering a comprehensive public high school experience with college-preparatory coursework, AP classes, and a range of extracurricular opportunities.
  • Marina High School and Ocean View High School rank lower statewide but remain solid options for families exploring the district. Both offer college-preparatory pathways, including opportunities to complete the coursework needed for UC and CSU eligibility. Their rankings tell only part of the story; students' course choices, interests, and goals are important parts of the high school experience.

What this means for your college list

In Coastal OC you'll find a lot of families deciding between "great local public" and "very expensive private." The ranking data mostly lands on the side of the public schools being genuinely competitive when it comes to outcomes.

Where the rankings help:

  1. If you're deciding between coastal cities for a home purchase, Laguna Beach sits at #76  and Corona del Mar in the top 200 in California. Both are strong options; the lifestyle difference is bigger than the ranking difference.
  2. If your student is at Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, or Edison, those are legitimate top California schools with solid college prep and real UC pipelines. The ranking doesn't hold your kid’s admission chances back.

Where they mislead:

  1. Small-district schools like Laguna Beach can score high on state test proficiency because the student body is small and academically homogeneous. That's a feature of the district demographic, not a differentiator of the school program.
  2. Large comprehensive schools like Huntington Beach or Edison rank lower because their student body is more diverse in academic profile. That's not a reason to avoid them. Admissions offices know what a comprehensive school offers.
  3. AP participation is 30% of the score. Schools with high AP participation rank higher. That doesn't automatically mean every student should max out on APs.
