Irvine Has One of California's Top Public High Schools. Central OC Has Five More in the Top 300.

US News released the 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings on August 18th, and Central Orange County has one of the strongest regional showings in the state. Oxford Academy in Cypress ranks #3 in California. Irvine Unified put five schools in California's top 300. And Troy High School in Fullerton, right on the northern edge, holds its top 30 California spot.

Quick methodology check. US News ranked about 18,000 public high schools nationally out of 27,000. Six factors were included: college readiness (30%, mostly AP participation and pass rates), state test scores (40% combined), curriculum breadth (10%), graduation rate (10%), underserved-student performance (10%). Data is from 2023-24; California had 1,678 schools ranked.

Oxford Academy is Orange County's crown

Oxford Academy in Cypress lands at #3 in California and #17 nationally. It's a college prep school in Anaheim Union High School District that admits students through a competitive entrance exam in 7th grade. Kids who get in and stay in are essentially in an academically selective environment from middle school through graduation.

Oxford is not the typical suburban public high school experience. It's more comparable to Stuyvesant in New York or Whitney in Cerritos. If your student thrives in an academic environment and you're in the district, applying to Oxford in 7th grade is a decision worth seriously considering.

Irvine Unified's five schools

All five in the state top 200. That's the deepest single-district lineup in Orange County and one of the deepest in California. Irvine parents ask me all the time which one is best. The honest answer is that Portola and University are close on academics, and after that the difference between the others is more about culture, size, and specific programs than about overall rigor.

Troy High School anchors North OC

Troy High School in Fullerton (Fullerton Joint Union High School District) sits at #28 in California and #202 nationally. It's a magnet high school with a strong tech/pre-med track that pulls kids from across the district and beyond.

Troy is a serious academic environment. If you're in the Fullerton area and your student is motivated by academics, it's worth understanding whether they'd be accepted and if the environment fits them.

Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA)

OCSA in Santa Ana ranks #32 in California. It's a public charter school that combines a rigorous college-preparatory academic program with pre-professional arts training. Students apply to a specific arts conservatory (music, dance, theater, visual arts, and more) before entering an admissions lottery. If your student is serious about the arts, OCSA is worth a look.

Beckman, Foothill Tustin, and other Tustin/Central OC schools

Beckman High School in Tustin Unified ranks among California's top 100 high schools, while Foothill High School rounds out the district's strong lineup. In Fullerton, Sunny Hills High School also stands out, ranking among California's top 80.

What this means for your college list

Central OC is home to some of Southern California's most competitive public high schools. Irvine Unified alone has more schools ranked in California's top 200 than many entire regions. That concentration of strong schools is both an advantage and a challenge for students competing within the same academic pool.

Where the rankings help:

  1. If you're moving to OC and picking between areas, the ranking data cleanly separates Central OC (deep) from Coastal OC (mixed) from South OC (solid but not top-heavy).
  2. If your student is considering magnet or specialized options, Oxford, Troy, and OCSA are three standouts, each offering a distinct academic experience. Understanding which school best aligns with your student's interests and goals matters far more than the differences in their rankings.
  3. If you're deciding whether to go private, OC's top public options genuinely compete with the well-known privates on college outcomes. Save the tuition unless the fit is dramatically different.

Where they mislead:

  1. The Irvine Unified peer intensity is real. Ranking your student’s chances at UCLA based on being at Portola versus being at Irvine High is not the right conversation. Being in the top 10% of your class at either school is what matters. And the top 10% at any Irvine school is a very tough peer group.
  2. AP participation is 30% of the score. OC schools rank high partly because AP participation is at ceiling levels.
  3. A 20-spot shift inside California's top 200 means almost nothing. All these schools are above the 95th percentile nationally.
