North OC's Rankings Just Landed. Here's How Troy, Sunny Hills, and Valencia Actually Stack Up.

US News released the 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings on August 18, 2026. North Orange County, from Fullerton up through Yorba Linda and out to Brea, has one of California's most talked-about magnet programs plus a deep bench of top-300 comprehensive public schools. Troy High School leads. But there's a lot of interesting data across the corridor worth understanding if you're picking a school district or want to consider how a school influences the college list.

Quick methodology check. US News ranked about 18,000 public high schools nationally out of 27,000. Six factors were included: college readiness (30%, mostly AP participation and pass rates), state test scores (40% combined), curriculum breadth (10%), graduation rate (10%), underserved-student performance (10%). Data is from 2023-24; California had 1,678 schools ranked.

Troy High School leads

Troy High School in Fullerton sits at #28 in California and #202 nationally. It's a magnet school in Fullerton Joint Union High School District with a strong tech/pre-med track that pulls kids from across the district and beyond through a competitive entrance exam.

Troy is a serious academic environment. If you're in the FJUHSD footprint and your student is on the academic side, applying to Troy is a significant decision. The environment is intense in a way that fits some kids and doesn't fit others.

Sunny Hills

Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton (also FJUHSD) sits in the California top 80. It's one of the strongest comprehensive high schools in North OC.

Sunny Hills has broader appeal than Troy. It's large and well-rounded with strong academics, arts, and athletics. AP participation is high, graduation rate is 98%+, and college outcomes are strong.

Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified

PYLUSD is one of North OC's most consistent public districts - four ranked schools all in California's top 300, all with strong AP participation and real UC pipelines.

Anaheim Union

Kennedy High School in La Palma sits in the California top 250. It's part of Anaheim Union High School District, which also runs Oxford Academy (covered in a separate Central OC blog).

What this means for your college list

North OC is one of those regions where families spend a lot of time comparing schools within the same district, and honestly the differences that matter most tend to be cultural, not academic.

Where the rankings help:

  1. If you're deciding between North OC areas for a home purchase, PYLUSD (Valencia, Yorba Linda, Esperanza, El Dorado) is deep. Sunny Hills in Fullerton is a top-80 California school. Troy is a serious magnet option. Any of these puts your kid in a rigorous college prep environment.
  2. If your kid is considering the Troy magnet track, it's genuinely one of the top public high school academic environments in California. But the intensity is real. Understand whether that fits your student before applying.
  3. If your kid is at a school ranked in the California top 300, they're above the 95th percentile nationally. Admissions offices at UCs and comparable private colleges know these schools.

Where they potentially mislead:

  1. AP participation is 30% of the score. North OC schools rank high partly because AP participation is at ceiling levels.
  2. A 20-spot shift inside California's top 300 means almost nothing. Valencia at #170 versus Yorba Linda at #220 is not a meaningful difference for admissions.
  3. The Troy magnet peer pool is different from the comprehensive schools. Being in the top 10% at Troy is not the same as being in the top 10% at Yorba Linda. Admissions offices know this. Rankings don't tell you where a student falls in the peer pool.
