South OC's Public High Schools Just Got Ranked. Here's How Tesoro, San Juan Hills, and Aliso Niguel Actually Stack Up.

US News released the 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings on August 18th. South Orange County, from San Clemente up through Mission Viejo and out to Ladera Ranch, is one of the most consistent slices of California. No huge movers. No dramatic drops. Just a bench of top-300 California schools where the differences between them are more about size, culture, and specific programs than about overall quality.

Quick methodology check. US News ranked about 18,000 public high schools nationally out of 27,000. Six factors: college readiness (30%, mostly AP participation and pass rates), state test scores (40% combined), curriculum breadth (10%), graduation rate (10%), underserved-student performance (10%). Data year is 2023-24. California had 1,678 schools ranked.

Tesoro leads South OC

Tesoro High School in Rancho Santa Margarita sits in the California top 110. It's the highest-ranked school in Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD), which includes most of the South OC public schools.

Tesoro is a newer school (opened 2001) with a strong AP roster and consistent college outcomes. If you're in the CUSD footprint and Tesoro is your zoned school, that's a real advantage.

Capistrano Unified's other schools

With six schools ranked among California’s top 275, CUSD stands out as one of the deepest public school districts in Southern California in terms of ranked-school density.

What this means for your college list

South OC families ask me the same question every year: "Are our public schools actually good enough for the UC/USC track, or should we be looking at private high schools?"

The ranking data answers this clearly. Yes.

Where the rankings help:

  1. If you're picking between South OC cities for a home purchase, the ranking differences between Tesoro, San Juan Hills, Aliso Niguel, Capistrano Valley, San Clemente, and Dana Hills are small. Pick the neighborhood you like. Your kid will land somewhere academically strong.
  2. If your student is at any CUSD school, they're at a top 400 California school. That's above the 95th percentile nationally. Admissions offices at UCs and comparable private colleges know this.
  3. If you're deciding whether the private option is worth it, the CUSD public high schools compete meaningfully with the private options on outcomes. That's not to say private is always the wrong choice. Rather, it's to say the ranking data doesn't support "our public school isn't good enough."

Where they mislead:

  1. AP participation drives a lot of these rankings. South OC schools rank where they do partly because AP participation is high. That's fine but it doesn't tell you whether your own kid should max out on AP classes.
  2. The 20-spot differences between CUSD schools are inside the margin of the formula. Comparing Tesoro at #110 California to San Clemente at #250 California is not meaningful for admissions. Both send plenty of students to UCs.
  3. The 2023-24 data year is not the school year your student will be in. Keep in mind that a freshman year experience at any of these schools in fall 2026 is not what the rankings measured.
