Santa Ana and West OC's Public Schools Are Higher Ranked Than Most Families Realize. Here's the 2026-27 Read.

US News released the 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings on August 18th. The Santa Ana and West OC data tells a story that gets under-covered every year: schools in more economically diverse districts, with strong college readiness scores and real UC pipelines, often outperform their reputation. La Quinta High School in Garden Grove sits in California's top 80. Pacifica in Garden Grove is in the top 150. Both are worth looking at closely.

Quick methodology check. US News ranked about 18,000 public high schools nationally out of 27,000. Six factors: college readiness (30%, mostly AP participation and pass rates), state test scores (40% combined), curriculum breadth (10%), graduation rate (10%), underserved-student performance (10%). Data year is 2023-24. California had 1,678 schools ranked.

La Quinta in Garden Grove leads the way

  • La Quinta High School in Westminsterlands in the California top 75. It's one of the highest-ranked public high schools in West OC and one of the strongest underserved-student performance stories in the region.

La Quinta scores well on the exact factors that most define US News's ranking: high AP participation, strong AP pass rates, and strong college readiness among all subgroups. Students who go to La Quinta and take advantage of the AP roster are competing at a real level for UCs and selective private colleges..

Pacifica High School in Garden Grove

  • Pacifica High School ranks among California’s top 125. It is part of Garden Grove Unified, a district that has shown notable improvement in college-readiness measures over the past decade.

Garden Grove Unified's other schools

  • Garden Grove High School sits in the California top 175. Bolsa Grande High School is in the California top 225. Both schools offer a wide range of academic programs and extracurricular opportunities.
  • Santa Ana Unified
  • Segerstrom High School in Santa Ana sits in the California top 300. It's a comprehensive high school with a strong career technical education (CTE) program alongside its academic track.
  • Middle College High School is a small dual-enrollment school on the Santa Ana College campus. Students earn real college credit while in high school. That model scores well on US News's college readiness measure.

Westminster and West OC

  • Westminster High School makes the California top 300, as part of Huntington Beach Union High School District, which also runs the more coastal schools Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and Edison.
  • Magnolia High School is a charter STEM-focused option that is consistently building strong college readiness numbers.

What this means for your college list

Here's what most Santa Ana and West OC families don't realize. The public schools here rank well and send students to UCs at steady rates. The perception that these schools are "not as good" as Irvine or Coastal OC is not supported by the ranking data, and it's not supported by the college outcomes data either.

Where the rankings help:

  1. If you're at a Garden Grove, Santa Ana, or West OC school and wondering whether you can get to a UC, the answer is yes. La Quinta, Pacifica, Garden Grove High, and Segerstrom all send kids to UCs every year. Being in the top 10% of the class at any of these schools is a very competitive position.
  2. If you're a family considering moving to Irvine specifically for the schools, look at the ranking data for the West OC schools first. A top-150 California school with less academic peer pressure might be a better fit for your student than a top-70 school with heavy competition.
  3. If you're a first-generation family, the underserved-student performance scores at La Quinta and Pacifica are genuinely strong. That's the exact story US News's ranking is designed to capture.

Where they mislead:

  1. AP participation is 30% of the score. Schools that push AP hard rank higher, and that can obscure the fact that not every kid needs to take 8 APs.
  2. The 2023-24 data year is not the current experience. Freshman year 2026 at any of these schools is not what the rankings measured. Data has likely changed somewhat in the last few years.
  3. Small movements are just noise. A school going from #150 to #170 is inside the formula's margin.
